Description

A collection of five late 19th-century Carte de Visite (CdV) albumen print photographs mounted on card stock, featuring subjects from the East Midlands region. The group includes portraits from several prominent regional photographers of the Victorian era. One full-length portrait depicts a military man in a dark tunic with white facings and a forage cap, carrying an infantry officer’s pattern sword and wearing several medals, including a Long Service and Good Conduct medal; this card is marked for J.W. Price of The Babington Studio, Derby and Ashby-de-la-Zouch. A second portrait shows a seated woman in a full-skirted crinoline-style dress holding a paper, produced by Pearson Photographic Artist of 17 St Peters Church Yard, Derby, featuring the Prince of Wales’s feathers and Ich Dien motto on the reverse. Two portraits are from the studio of G. Caldwell, Nottingham: one showing a woman by an ornate pedestal from the Rembrandt Art Studio on Carrington Street, and another depicting a young woman in a dress with mid-1890s leg-of-mutton sleeves from the 95 Carrington Street Bridge location. The final item is a three-quarter length portrait of a young woman with a floral corsage by Henri L. Morel of 31 Bentinck Road, Nottingham.

Dimensions: 64 mm x 102 mm.

Condition report:

The collection is in good antique condition overall. The card mounts exhibit typical age-related wear including light foxing, corner bumping, and minor surface soiling. One card (Caldwell, 95 Carrington Street) has a strip of old adhesive tape across the reverse design. The Morel card shows surface scuffing and adhesive residue on the reverse. The photographic images remain generally clear with the tonal range characteristic of the albumen process.
