Description

A collection of five Victorian-era albumen print photographs on Carte de Visite (CdV) mounts, all produced by photographic studios located in Nottingham, England. The group contains portraits of various sitters, primarily young women and one young man, showcasing late Victorian fashion including high-necked dresses, puffed sleeves, and ruffled collars.

The collection includes two portraits from the studio of G. Caldwell, 95 Carrington Street Bridge, Nottingham. One is a three-quarter length portrait of a young woman, and the second is a vignetted bust-length portrait of a young woman. Both feature ornate lithographed studio advertisements on the reverse.

Also included is a bust-length portrait of a young man with a moustache by The Basford Photographic Co., Radford Road, Nottingham, presented on a black-bordered mount. A seated portrait of a woman in a dark textured dress is attributed to A. Booth, 69 Long Row, Nottingham, with red stylised printing on the mount. The final item is a bust-length portrait of a young woman by J. H. Woodall, Bulwell, Nottingham, mounted on a larger grey card with gold embossed lettering.

Dimensions: Approximately 105mm x 63mm per standard mount.

Condition report:

Overall condition is fair to good for the period. One Caldwell portrait has a significant surface tear on the bottom front edge. The Basford Photographic Co. card shows adhesive residue on the reverse and a small surface mark on the image. The Woodall portrait shows typical edge silvering and fading. The second Caldwell portrait exhibits noticeable foxing and brown spotting on the lower half and reverse. Minor edge wear, surface scuffing, and age-related toning are present across the lot.
