Description

A collection of five Victorian-era albumen print cartes de visite on card mounts, featuring individual studio portraits of two men and three women in period attire. The first card depicts a man in a three-piece suit and bears the printed mark G. Gibson and Son at 8 Peck Lane, Nottingham on both the front and reverse. The second, a profile portrait of a woman, features a decorative banner on the reverse with the transcribed characters W. Parker, Hertford St, Coventry. The third card shows a woman leaning on a chair and is marked T. White, Lewisham on the front, with the reverse stating The Lewisham Studio, T. White, Photographer, and the address 133, High St. Lewisham, S.E. The final two cards are on black card mounts and show a woman and a man; the former is marked J. Caloe and Son and the latter J. Caloe and Sons, with both indicating the location Basford and Bulwell. These items are unframed and represent typical commercial studio portraiture of the mid-to-late 19th century.

Condition report:

The photographs exhibit varying degrees of age-related fading and surface wear. Foxing and minor staining are present, particularly noticeable on the edges of the Lewisham example. The two black-mounted cards show significant adhesive and paper residue on their reverses, consistent with having been previously mounted in a photo album. There is minor wear to the corners and edges of the card mounts throughout the collection.
