Lot 128:
Description
A contemporary studio pottery jug by the Cypriot artist Vassos Demetriou (born 1947), dating from the mid-to-late 20th century. The earthenware vessel is of globular form, supported by three integral short feet, and features a wide pinched spout with a simple loop handle. The decoration is divided into two distinct zones. The neck and handle are finished in a thick, cream-coloured crackle glaze with deliberate crazing. The main body is finished with a matte, charcoal-grey ground, decorated with incised geometric symbols including a cross and an arrow motif. It is further embellished with raised slip-trailed designs, including a turquoise-filled triangle and a wavy, intertwined pattern in turquoise and terracotta hues. Small decorative nubs are applied to the sides. The base features an incised signature reading Vassos.
Condition report:
Generally good condition consistent with age and use. The heavy crazing to the white glaze on the upper section is a deliberate decorative effect typical of the artist\'s technique. A small blue circular inventory label is present on the neck. No significant chips, cracks, or repairs are visible.
