Lot 159:
Description
This item is an Akan (Ashanti) Bronze, known as an abrammuo, originating from West Africa, specifically present-day Ghana or Ivory Coast. The figure is cast from a copper alloy, likely brass, using the traditional lost-wax (cire perdue) casting technique. It depicts a female figure standing before a large mortar, holding a vertical pestle with both hands in the act of pounding grain. The figure is styled with a distinctive pointed headdress and a simple waist cloth, mounted upon an integral, thin rectangular base. The surface exhibits the characteristic irregular texture and stylised anatomical features associated with traditional Akan metalwork. These objects were historically utilised by the Akan people for the measurement of gold dust and frequently served as vehicles for local proverbs and social commentary.
Condition report:
The figure is in good condition, featuring a deep, naturally aged dark brown patina. Significant use-wear is visible on the high points of the casting, including the headdress, facial features, shoulders, and the rim of the mortar, where handling has rubbed the patina to reveal the lighter, There are no visible signs of structural damage, cracks, or previous repairs.
