Lot 180:
Description
A gilt-metal and cloisonne enamel mantel clock in the Chinese export style. The architectural case is constructed from gilt-metal, featuring a central domed top surmounted by a finial and flanked by scrolling foliate supports. The body is set with two double-sided oval panels decorated with cloisonne enamel. The cloisonne decoration features a turquoise-blue ground with multi-coloured scrolling floral and foliate motifs in shades of dark blue, red, green, pink, and yellow. The front face surrounding the dial is finished in cobalt blue enamel with white scrolling foliate patterns. The white enamel dial displays black Roman numerals for the hours and an outer ring of Arabic numerals for the minutes. It features decorative black openwork hands and a red centre-seconds hand. The reverse features a hinged gilt-metal door engraved with a vase motif. The interior houses a mechanical movement, appearing to be a later 20th-century replacement or simplified design. No maker marks or signatures are present on the case or movement.
Height: 15 cm.
Condition report:
The clock exhibits signs of age and wear. There are visible chips and losses to the enamel work, specifically on the top frieze, the side oval panels, and the lower base section. The gilt-metal surfaces show tarnish, surface scratches, and minor dents along the base edges. The mechanical movement is present but its functional condition is not tested; it appears to be a later addition to the case.
