Description

This lot consists of two vintage calcium carbide acetylene vehicle lamps dating from the early 20th century, approximately 1900 to 1920. One lamp is clearly marked with an embossed circular emblem on the flared base of the lower reservoir for Powell and Hanmer Limited, a prominent manufacturer of cycle accessories based in Birmingham, England. The second, taller lamp is stamped on the side of the lower canister with the text Made in England, a right-pointing arrow, and a horizontal line with an upward-pointing arrow accompanied by the instruction This Line. Both lamps are manufactured from black japanned enamelled steel with nickel-plated brass fittings. The construction features a vertical cylindrical water reservoir positioned above a lower carbide chamber, which feeds a forward-facing burner housing. Both lamps retain their green faceted glass jewel side lenses and are equipped with rear mounting brackets and thumbscrews.

Taller lamp height: 18-19 cm

Smaller lamp height: 15 cm.

Condition report:

The lamps are in fair to good condition for their age, exhibiting wear consistent with long-term storage. There is significant loss, chipping, and crazing to the black japanned enamel finish on both examples. The taller lamp is missing its front glass lens, exposing the tarnished internal silvered reflector. The smaller lamp has its front glass lens intact, but it displays a significant star-shaped crack across the centre. All four green faceted side lenses remain intact. Moderate to heavy surface oxidation and rust are present on the rear mounting brackets and clamping hardware. The nickel plating on the front rims shows pitting and wear. These items are sold as historical collectibles and are untested for functionality; mechanical components may be seized due to corrosion.
