Lot 225:
Description
This lot comprises two vintage pocket compasses. The first is a British military-issued prismatic survival compass, featuring a circular metal case with a hinged lid and a small locking latch. The interior contains a liquid-filled dial with degree markings and cardinal directions. The base is stamped with the Broad Arrow symbol and the following inscriptions: B/132, REF. NO 6B/2593, and SERIAL NO 1232RAA/55. The 6B reference indicates Royal Air Force issue for aircrew survival kits, with the serial number suffix suggesting a 1955 manufacture or issue date.
The second item is a civilian hunting-case pocket compass in a silver-toned metal case, likely nickel-plated brass, featuring a hinged lid and a pendant loop. The interior has a white dial with a balanced needle, cardinal points, and a 0-360 degree scale. This item is similar in design to the US Engineer Corps patterns produced during the early 20th century, although it bears no visible manufacturer marks.
Diameter: approximately 4.5 cm
Diameter: approximately 5 cm.
Condition report:
The RAF survival compass shows minor surface wear to the metal casing consistent with age and use; the internal dial and sighting mechanism appear intact. The civilian compass shows tarnishing and surface scratches to the exterior, with significant loss of the original black finish to the interior of the lid. The needle moves freely.
