Lot 25:
Description
This collection comprises three vintage brooches presented in a period retailer case from G. Cornell and Sons Ltd of Maidstone. The first item is a stylized floral brooch, possibly an orchid, crafted in white metal. The petals are pavé-set with numerous marcasites, and a single dark grey cultured pearl measuring approximately 6mm is set at the centre. It is fitted with a horizontal pin and a simple C-clasp. A small rectangular mark is present on the reverse but is not clearly legible. The second item is a symmetrical oval cluster brooch in gold-toned base metal. It is set with clear faceted glass rhinestones, featuring a large central oval stone surrounded by a halo of round-cut stones and flanked by two pear-cut stones. It uses a horizontal pin with a C-clasp. The third item is a floral spray brooch featuring a decorative branch with four small five-petalled flowers. The leaves and petals are set with marcasites, and each flower is centred with a small white or cream cultured pearl of approximately 3mm. It is fitted with a vertical pin and a roll-over safety clasp. The presentation case is navy blue fabric-covered with a cream satin and black velvet interior, printed in gold-tone with the retailer details for G. Cornell and Sons Ltd, 12 and 14 Gabriels Hill, Maidstone.
Grey pearl: 6mm diameter
Flower pearls: 3mm diameter each.
Condition report:
The brooches are in good to excellent vintage condition. All stones and pearls appear to be present and securely set. The white metal brooch shows minor surface tarnish on the reverse. The rhinestone brooch shows some age-related yellowing to the foil backing of the central stones, which is typical for costume jewellery of this period. The presentation case shows minor external wear and scuffing to the edges, but the interior remains clean and the hinge is functional.
