Lot 39:
Description
A pair of silver brooches in the Celtic Revival style. The first is a circular openwork brooch featuring a zoomorphic motif known as the Quendale Beast, a design attributed to Shetland Silvercraft and inspired by Viking-age archaeological discoveries. The reverse is stamped SILVER and bears an indistinct circular maker’s mark. It is fitted with a horizontal hinged pin and C-clasp. The second is a penannular style brooch, often referred to as a Tara brooch, featuring an open-ring frame with interlaced Celtic knotwork. It features a long hinged pin that extends past the frame, secured by a C-clasp. Small, illegible indentations are present on the reverse.
Condition report:
Both brooches exhibit significant dark patination and surface tarnishing throughout. The openwork structures remain intact with no visible breaks or repairs. Pin mechanisms are present and appear functional.
