Description
A George VI Special Constabulary Faithful Service Medal, pre-1948 issue. The obverse features the bare-headed effigy of King George VI facing left with the inscription GEORGIVS VI D : G : BR : OMN : REX ET INDIAE IMP :. Small initials P.M. for the artist Percy Metcalfe are visible at the truncation of the neck. The reverse displays the central text FOR FAITHFUL SERVICE IN THE SPECIAL CONSTABULARY, bordered by a wreath of oak leaves to the left and laurel leaves to the right. The medal is suspended from its original silk ribbon featuring three white and two black vertical stripes on each side of a central red stripe, complete with a safety pin mounting. The piece is housed in a period-appropriate black cardboard presentation case with a purple velvet-effect base and a cream silk-lined lid. Naming to the edge is not visible in the provided images.
Condition report:
The medal shows significant green verdigris and dark tarnish to the obverse and reverse surfaces, particularly around the lower rim. The details of the strike remain clear beneath the oxidation. The ribbon is in good condition with light age-related soiling but no fraying. The presentation case is in fair to good condition with minor shelf wear and light foxing to the interior silk lining.
