Description

A mid-century modern novelty corkscrew in the form of a stylised cat, designed by Walter Bosse and the Vienna Black Gold series. The piece is cast in brass with a dark patinated body and a polished brass face and tail. This design is frequently associated with the Austrian designer Walter Bosse, though visually identical examples were also produced in England under the Gunga Din brand during the 1950s. The item is currently unmarked, with the underside of the feet showing an irregular cast texture. The corkscrew component is securely fixed into the rear of the feline figure to form the tail.

Condition report:

The item shows signs of age and use. There is visible wear to the dark surface finish, particularly around the ears and the edges of the face, revealing the underlying yellow brass. Minor surface oxidation and pitting are present on the brass face and along the length of the corkscrew. The base of the feet shows wear from contact with surfaces.
