Lot 108:
Description
This lot features two scientific navigation instruments. The first is a vintage-style sighting compass constructed from polished brass. It incorporates a hinged lid with a circular glass viewing port and etched vertical sighting line, paired with an internal folding sight vane. The internal dial is graduated in degrees from 0 to 360 and is inscribed with the word London at the centre. The second instrument is a modern prismatic sighting compass with a black metal body. It features a large viewing window in the hinged lid, a rotating external bezel graduated from 1 to 36 representing 10-degree increments, and an internal floating dial. A spirit level is integrated into the base to ensure accurate horizontal alignment. This compass is housed in a black synthetic protective pouch with a Velcro fastening, marked with the Draper brand logo.
Condition report:
The brass compass displays a varied patina with some surface oxidation and minor debris visible beneath the glass. The black prismatic compass shows minor wear and paint loss to the edges of the housing; the mechanical functions and spirit level appear to be in good working order. The Draper carrying pouch shows light signs of use but remains fully functional.
