Description
A collection of decorative brass instruments styled after antique nautical and scientific equipment. The group comprises a large sundial compass, a smaller sundial compass, and two navigational compasses, three of which are presented in fitted hardwood boxes.
The large boxed sundial compass features a circular brass dial protected by a glass cover, displaying an outer 0–360 degree scale and a chapter ring with Roman numerals. The centre bears a decorative crest and the engraved text WEST LONDON. It is fitted with a fixed, cross-shaped gnomon and is housed in a mahogany-stained hardwood box with a red velvet-lined interior and brass hinges.
The small boxed sundial compass includes a folding curved gnomon and an adjustable chapter ring with Roman numerals. The internal compass dial is marked with cardinal and intercardinal points. It is housed in a hardwood box with a green velvet lining and decorative brass inlay to the lid.
The small boxed navigational compass has a circular brass case with a dial showing cardinal and intercardinal points and a 0–360 degree scale. It is presented in a hardwood box with a red velvet lining.
The pocket navigational compass features a circular brass case with a hinged flip-top lid and a suspension loop. The internal dial layout matches the small boxed navigational compass.
All items are contemporary decorative reproductions featuring manufactured aged finishes and polished brass surfaces.
Condition report:
Generally very good. The brass components show light surface oxidation and a manufactured patina consistent with decorative reproductions. The hardwood cases are intact with minor shelf wear and light surface scratches. All instruments appear functional for decorative purposes.
