Lot 110:
Description
A collection of various navigational instruments comprising several traditional and modern examples. The group includes a handheld Autohelm Personal Compass with a black composite casing, liquid crystal display, and control buttons for memory and timer functions, fitted with a red lanyard. Two military-style sighting compasses in black casings are present: one prismatic model with a hinged lid containing an internal mirror and a rotating graduated bezel, and one lensatic model with a sighting wire and thumb loop. The collection further includes a traditional open-faced compass in a brass body with a white dial showing cardinal and ordinal points. One circular metal compass features a bezel graduated from 0 to 360 and exhibits heavy green and grey patination. Also included is a nickel or silver-plated pocket compass with a hinged lid and suspension ring, alongside a small circular brass-cased compass. Completing the lot is an ornate cast brass flip-top case or fob featuring intricate scrollwork and a large green glass cabochon stone to the lid; the interior is designed as a holder for a compass, though the internal component is not fitted.
Condition report:
The collection shows varying degrees of age and use. The modern digital and composite-cased compasses appear to be in good functional condition. The brass and metal instruments show expected surface wear, tarnishing, and some oxidisation. One circular compass exhibits heavy surface corrosion and thick patination. The ornate brass fob is missing its internal compass insert. Mechanical movement in hinged lids remains functional. Dials on older units show internal dust and age-related wear.
