Lot 138:
Description
An antique bonneted miner’s safety lamp, likely of the Marsaut or Clanny type. The lamp features a tall, cylindrical steel bonnet with a series of vertical ventilation slots at the upper rim and is topped with a heavy-gauge wire swivel hanging hook. The lower section consists of a thick glass chimney protected by five brass support pillars. The base is constructed from brass and includes a flat-wick burner assembly and a side-mounted locking hasp designed for a lead seal or small padlock. The lower brass flange is embossed with the digits 1032, serving as a serial or inventory number. No specific manufacturer’s name or brand stamps are clearly discernible.
Height: 25 cm
Diameter: 9 cm.
Condition report:
The lamp is presented in as found condition, exhibiting clear evidence of age and historical industrial use. The steel bonnet possesses a dark, oxidised patina with notable surface rust and pitting. The brass components show a heavy, aged tarnish. The glass chimney is intact without visible cracks, though it is clouded with internal residue. The internal safety gauze appears to be present, though its structural integrity has not been verified. The locking mechanism remains in place. This item is a historical collectible and has not been tested for functional use.
