Description
An ornate Rococo revival style decorative wall plaque of Italian manufacture, dating from the mid-20th century. The piece features a high-relief, figure of a gentleman in 18th-century period dress, including a pink frock coat, embroidered waistcoat, blue patterned breeches, and a powdered wig. The figure is mounted upon a ground of gold-coloured crushed velvet within an asymmetrical shield-shaped frame. A small metallic-toned insect ornament is applied to the velvet ground beside the figure. The frame is constructed from moulded composition with a gold-gilt finish, decorated with elaborate scrolling acanthus leaves and flourishes. The reverse features a hardboard backing secured with metal clips and screws. Markings to the reverse include a white rectangular label printed with Art. 179 and Modello Depositato. A partially obscured gold foil label is present at the base, with visible text reading MADE IN ITALY. Handwritten characters J E are present in ink at the top of the backboard. The design and labels are consistent with decorative items marketed by Empire Art Products.
Height: 66 cm
Width: 41 cm.
Condition report:
The plaque is in good vintage condition. The porcelain figure remains intact with no visible chips or cracks. The gold velvet ground shows minor surface dust and light age-related wear. The gilt-effect finish on the frame exhibits light wear to the raised edges consistent with age.
