Description
A collection of decorative metalware items including a boxed desk set and lidded pots. The desk set consists of a magnifying glass and a matching letter opener, both featuring cast brass handles with a fluted or ribbed design and spherical ball pommels. The magnifying glass has a brass frame and the letter opener is fitted with a metal blade. These items are housed in a rectangular presentation case lined with purple velvet and satin. The lidded pots are finished in differing metal tones, with one showing a copper-toned finish and another in a silver-toned metal. Each lid is topped with a cast finial in the shape of a standing elephant. The cylindrical bodies and lids of the pots are decorated with intricate repoussé and chased metalwork, depicting a continuous frieze of animals, including elephants, within a landscape or foliate border. This style is characteristic of mid-20th-century Indian export metalware. No maker’s marks or hallmarks are visible on any of the items or the presentation case.
Condition report:
The brass elements of the desk set show minor surface tarnish and oxidation. The purple lining of the presentation case exhibits signs of fading and wear. The lidded pots show a light patina and surface tarnish consistent with age.
