Lot 199:
Description
A modern interpretation of a traditional Zanzibar or Kuwaiti-style chest, known as a mandoos. The exterior is finished in black paint and heavily ornamented with brass studding and pierced brass plaques. The front is decorated with three large circular medallions featuring geometric nailhead patterns and star-shaped pierced brass centres. The chest is fitted with two short drawers at the base and stands on four turned bun feet, each embellished with brass studs. To the interior, the chest features a small lidded compartment to one side. The lid is secured with a modern full-length brass piano hinge. The chest is fitted with heavy cast brass swing handles to the sides, each stamped with the mark AENI flanked by stars. The primary material is wood, with drawers and interior components showing contemporary construction.
Condition report:
The chest is in overall fair condition. There is visible surface wear, dust, and light scratching to the black finish throughout, particularly on the interior surfaces. The right-hand drawer is missing its central brass pull, leaving an open mounting hole. The brass work displays a light patina and minor oxidation consistent with age and use.
