Description
This lot comprises two small decorative objects: a West African cast metal figurine and a miniature wooden desktop accessory. The figurine, cast in brass or bronze, depicts a woman using a large mortar and pestle to pound grain. It is rendered in a traditional stylised manner characteristic of West African metalwork, featuring elongated limbs and an integral rectangular base with a small secondary vessel. The metal possesses a dark, aged patina with highlights on areas of higher relief. The second item is a miniature hardwood box modelled after a George III knife box or stationery chest. It features a sloping hinged lid with a brass piano-style hinge and a decoratively scalloped front apron. The interior is fitted to hold pencils, with several short, used examples included. No markings, signatures, or inscriptions were found on either item.
Condition report:
The cast figurine is in good condition with minor surface wear consistent with age and handling. The wooden box is in fair to good condition, exhibiting visible scuffs to the corners and edges, and a significant area of surface finish loss on the reverse panel. The pencils show heavy use-wear.
