Lot 20:
Description
A group of commemorative and award medals comprising philatelic, sporting, and religious subjects. The collection includes two bronze-coloured philatelic medals featuring a left-facing profile bust of Queen Victoria on the obverse, after the design by William Wyon R.A., with the legend VICTORIA REGINA. The reverse of each medal bears a rectangular postage stamp-shaped plaque inscribed STAMPEX TROPHY CONTEST AWARD below a stagecoach motif. Also included is a bronze Reading Amateur Regatta medal, the obverse featuring an ornate interlaced monogram and the date 1842, with the reverse engraved in the centre SENIOR II COXED FOURS 1994 within a border reading READING AMATEUR REGATTA. The collection is completed by a dark-patinated metal medal, likely bronze or lead, commemorating Pope Clement XI. The obverse depicts a profile bust of the Pope in ceremonial robes and tiara with the Latin legend CLEMENS XI PONT OPT MAX. The reverse shows a large rectangular building, the Ospizio di San Michele, with the inscription ADDITO ANNO PRAESIDIO above the date 1704.
Condition report:
The Stampex and regatta medals are in good to very fine condition with minor surface marks and light, even toning. The 1704 Papal medal exhibits heavy wear to the high points of the design, significant surface pitting, and a dark, uneven patination consistent with age or storage environment.
