Description

This lot comprises three various compasses, featuring a boxed instrument and two military-style lensatic compasses. The first is a surveyor’s or pocket compass with a brass casing, set into a mahogany-coloured hardwood presentation box with a green felt-lined interior. The white dry card dial displays a central compass rose with cardinal directions and a fleur-de-lis marking North. The outer edge is graduated in four quadrants from 0 to 90 degrees. The wooden case is fitted with two knurled brass adjustment knobs and a simple brass hook-and-eye latch. The second instrument is a military-style prismatic lensatic marching compass with a matte olive drab metal body. The base is engraved with map scales for 1:50,000 and distance graduations for 2,000, 4,000, and 6,000 metres. The rotating compass card features dual scales in degrees and mils. It is equipped with a folding sighting lid with a vertical hairline, a rear sight with a magnifying prismatic lens, and a thumb loop. The third is a lensatic compass with a black-finished body and brass-tone accents. The rotating dial features cardinal directions marked as N, O, S, and W, with the O indicating Ost (East), suggesting a continental European origin. This compass includes a knurled brass-tone bezel, a hinged sighting lid, and a gold-tone wire thumb loop.

Condition report:

The collection is in good functional condition. The boxed brass compass shows natural patination consistent with age and minor surface wear to the wooden case. Both lensatic compasses exhibit light scuffing and finish wear to the exterior bodies, while the dials remain clear and the mechanical sighting components are intact.
