Description
A Victorian-era tea caddy constructed from figured rosewood with two interior compartments. The exterior lid and both interior lids are inset with white reverse-painted glass panels, decorated with polychrome scrolling foliate borders in red, blue, and gold. Centred on these panels are calligraphic characters in a Chinoiserie style, including the character for tea (茶) on the left interior lid. The interior lids open to reveal compartments lined with metal foil for tea storage. The main lid’s interior is finished with a green velvet border. The box is fitted with brass hinges and a brass escutcheon for a lock.
Condition report:
The piece is in fair antique condition. The wood displays general age-related wear, including surface scratches and minor scuffs. A prominent diagonal crack is visible across the verre églomisé panel on the right interior lid. The metal foil lining shows tarnishing and minor losses consistent with use and age. The brass hardware is intact with some oxidation.
