Lot 66:
Description
This handheld optical instrument is a decorative brass kaleidoscope of the type frequently attributed to Gilbert and Sons in modern nautical-themed reproductions. The cylindrical body is constructed from polished brass and decorated with several sets of incised concentric rings. A knurled decorative band is situated towards the objective end. An applied rectangular brass plaque with a blackened ground is fixed to the barrel and bears the following transcription: GILBERT & SONS, To Her majesty, Royal Navy, 8. Street Black Wall, London 1895. Based on the construction and the specific style of the plaque, the item is identified as a late 20th-century decorative piece designed in the 19th-century British style. The instrument features a circular glass viewing aperture at the top and a frosted glass diffuser at the base. It is functional, containing internal mirrors and loose coloured fragments to produce geometric patterns.
Condition report:
The kaleidoscope is in good overall condition. The brass surfaces show minor surface scratches, light pitting, and some tarnish consistent with use as a decorative object. The internal optical components and mirrors are intact and functional. There are no significant dents or visible repairs.
