Lot 107:
Description
A collection of five early 20th-century metal mesh evening and coin purses, featuring designs in the style of manufacturers such as Whiting and Davis and Mandalian Manufacturing Co. The group comprises a variety of constructions including one gold-toned gate-top expanding mesh bag with a cylindrical cap and mechanical ring closure, and one large silver-toned flat-link mesh purse with a plain rectangular frame and kiss-lock clasp. Also included is a fine silver-toned mesh purse featuring an engraved frame set with two blue glass cabochon thumbpieces, and two smaller silver-toned ring-mesh coin purses with kiss-lock frames, one of which has a decorative scalloped edge. The items are constructed from mixed metal mesh, including silver-plated and gold-plated brass and nickel silver. No maker’s marks or hallmarks are visible on the frames or mesh.
Dimensions: Items range from approximately 6cm to 12cm in width.
Condition report:
The collection is in varied vintage and antique condition. The metal mesh shows age-related tarnish and minor distortions to the bodies. One silver-toned purse displays significant dark spotting and heavy tarnish. The frames exhibit a natural patina, surface scratches, and tarnish consistent with age. All closures, including the gate-top mechanism, appear functional but show surface wear.
