Description

A Chinese bronze tripod censer of lobed, foliate form, cast with a mallow-flower-shaped body and a flared rim. The vessel is fitted with two upright loop handles and stands on three short, integral feet. The exterior is finished with a dark, mottled brown patina. The underside of the censer features a recessed square seal mark in seal script reading Shi Sou. This mark refers to a celebrated caster from the late Ming dynasty, although it was widely used on later revivalist pieces. The casting quality and surface characteristics of this example are consistent with a late Qing dynasty or early Republic period origin.

Condition report:

The censer is in good condition overall, displaying a well-matured dark brown mottled patina. Minor surface wear and rubbing are present, particularly on the feet and handles. Small areas of green verdigris oxidation and surface pitting are visible on the interior and rim. No cracks, losses, or repairs are evident.
