Description
A trio of items comprising a Ritz novelty alarm clock, a silver-mounted stand, and a small metal bottle.
The novelty desk alarm clock is fashioned as a tortoise with a cast metal case, likely brass or bronze, featuring a hinged shell with a hammered finish. The shell opens to reveal a white dial signed RITZ with black Roman numeral hour markers and ornate hands. The mechanical movement is housed within the body, with winding and adjustment controls located on the underside, including a stop-alarm lever. The design is characteristic of mid-20th century West German manufacture.
The novelty stand consists of a carved dark upright, possibly horn, in the form of a branch, set into a circular sterling silver base. The base is decorated with a chased foliate scroll pattern and bears British hallmarks including the lion passant and anchor for Birmingham.
The small rectangular silver-toned bottle features a screw-on nozzle cap and a handwritten paper label, possibly intended as a watch oiler.
Condition report:
The tortoise clock case shows a natural aged patina and surface wear consistent with age. The clock dial is clear; the mechanical movement is sold as seen and is not tested for timekeeping or alarm functionality. The silver-mounted stand shows tarnish to the base and the hallmarks are partially rubbed. The small bottle shows minor surface wear and discolouration to the paper label.
