Lot 141:
Description
A large folk art jug, the tapered body and handle densely decorated in the pique-assiette style, also known as a memory jug. The piece is encrusted with a diverse array of multi-coloured ceramic shards, including fragments of blue and white transferware, polychrome floral patterns, solid-coloured pieces, and a fragment depicting a partial portrait. The lower section features a circumferential band of circular glass cabochons in shades of blue, white, and pale green. The entire mosaic is set into a dark grey cement-like grout. One shard near the base is inscribed with the partial text LAC DE…. The underside consists of a metal base exhibiting significant surface oxidation and rust. In the centre-right area of the base, the numerals 2 and 0 are marked in a dark material. Black felt protective pads are attached to the underside.
Condition report:
The jug is in a condition consistent with its handmade folk art nature. There are areas of exposed grout where shards appear to be missing or were not originally placed, particularly on one side of the body. The grout application on the rim and handle is irregular and textured. The metal base is heavily rusted and has been fitted with black felt protective pads. Some ceramic shards may have sharp edges.
