Description

This lot comprises an extensive assortment of vintage cigarette and trade cards, primarily of British origin, dating from the early to late 20th century. The collection includes numerous sets and part-sets, many of which are housed within period-appropriate or original cigarette and cigar packaging from manufacturers such as W.D. and H.O. Wills (Bristol and London), John Player and Sons, Ogden’s, Godfrey Phillips Ltd, Carreras Ltd, and Benson and Hedges. Specific brands visible include Star, Wild Woodbine, Navy Cut Medium, Doncella Coronets, Robin, The Greys Silk Cut, Turf, Hamlet, De Reszke Blue Label, and Grandee. Card subjects identified include natural history (featuring titles such as Living Ocean, African Wildlife, and Wild Flowers), sporting or military portraits, aircraft, and various botanical studies. A partial deck of miniature playing cards is also present. Many of the tobacco packs have been repurposed to organise specific sets, featuring handwritten ink inscriptions such as Pack 1 Wild Flowers and Set 2 Living Ocean.

Visible length on measuring tape: 22 inches (approximately 56 cm).

Condition report:

The collection is in varied, used condition commensurate with age. The cards generally appear well-preserved within their respective packs, although some edge wear and surface soiling are present on exposed examples. The tobacco packaging exhibits significant wear including creasing, surface abrasions, split seams, and edge tears. One plain box shows heavy foxing and staining. Several packs bear contemporary handwritten ink annotations.
