Description

This is a mid-20th-century men’s bowler hat produced by the prestigious hatter Herbert Johnson of London. The hat is constructed from black fur felt and features a traditional stiffened rounded crown and an up-curved brim finished with grosgrain ribbon binding. A wide black grosgrain ribbon band with a flat bow is situated around the base of the crown. The interior is lined with cream-coloured satin, featuring a gathered sunburst side wall and a central gold-tone printed crest for Herbert Johnson (Bond St) Ltd, 38 New Bond St, London, W. A tan leather sweatband is fitted to the interior rim, featuring a small white decorative bow at the rear and embossed gold lettering reading Herbert Johnson, 38 New Bond St, London W. The hat is accompanied by its original cardboard delivery box, which features a printed label with the Royal coat of arms, indicating the company held a Royal Warrant to Her Majesty the Queen. The box bears handwritten provenance details for A F Eadon Esq of Croft Farm, Holmesfield, near Sheffield, and includes a postage label with a 1960 date stamp.

Condition report:

The hat is in very good vintage condition, appearing well-preserved with only minor surface lint. The interior lining and leather sweatband remain clean. The original cardboard box is in worn condition, exhibiting significant age-related damage including corner splits, scuffing, surface staining, and foxing, although it remains structurally intact for storage.
