Lot 160:
Description
This lot comprises two ethnographic items: a hand-carved wooden marriage or unity chain and a small carved vessel flute or ocarina. The chain is a single-piece carving of a mid-to-dark toned hardwood, featuring two stylised human figures at the base in a seated posture with hands on thighs. Above the figures are five interlocking circular links, all carved from the same continuous block of wood. A small red fabric ribbon is tied to the top link. The ocarina is a bulbous, hand-carved instrument featuring a mouthpiece and two finger holes. The surface is decorated with an incised, stylised human figure with raised arms, accented with orange-red pigment. It is suspended on a simple dark brown cord.
Chain length: approximately 60 cm
Ocarina length: approximately 5 cm.
Condition report:
The wooden chain is in generally good condition, displaying minor surface scuffing and light wear consistent with age and display. The links are intact with no evidence of breaks or repairs. The ocarina shows light surface abrasions and minor wear around the apertures, consistent with its function and age.
