Description
This collection comprises several wooden decorative and utilitarian objects of mixed European origin. Included are two Eastern Orthodox icons housed in deep-set, ornate wooden frames with carved egg-and-dart borders. One icon features a Cyrillic inscription identifying the subject as St. Ambrose of Optina. The collection includes a wall-mounted wooden match holder with a textured metal faceplate featuring cut-outs of a smoking pipe and a match; the unit includes a lidded top compartment, a small drawer, and a circular base receptacle. A hand-carved wooden relief plaque depicts praying hands in the style of Albrecht Dürer with an incised Cyrillic mark in the upper corner. A large rustic bowl is hand-carved in the form of two cupped hands showing heavy tool marks. A rectangular wooden storage box features a sliding tambour lid decorated with three bands of geometric patterns and a partitioned interior. The lot is completed by a set of graduated wooden scoops tied with cord and two decorative wooden spoons with darkened pyrographic decoration presented in a matching cylindrical vessel.
Cupped hands bowl width approximately 23 cm.
Condition report:
The items are in good antique and vintage condition with signs of age and use consistent with their nature. The religious icons show visible craquelure and surface darkening to the painted areas. The tambour box lid exhibits slight separation between the slats typical of its construction. General surface wear, minor dings, and light surface scratches are present across the wooden pieces. Patina is well-developed on the older components.
