Description

A mid-19th-century campaign-style desk clock by George Gray of London. The square-form case is constructed from mahogany and features protective brass corner reinforcements. The white enamel dial is inscribed G. GRAY, 44 FLEET STREET, and LONDON, featuring black Roman numeral hour markers and an outer minute track with diamond-shaped indices at five-minute intervals. The dial is protected by a hinged brass bezel with glass. The case is fitted with a circular brass top plate housing a fold-down ring handle. Engraved brass plaques are positioned above and below the dial aperture, reading G. Gray and Fleet Street respectively, with the lower brass corner mounts engraved 44 and London. The clock movement is contained within a circular brass drum housing, accessed via a removable mahogany back panel which is fitted with a rectangular brass plate. George Gray is recorded as a clock and watchmaker at 44 Fleet Street between circa 1839 and 1851.

Condition report:

The mahogany front panel exhibits significant splitting and cracking radiating from the central aperture. General surface wear, scuffs, and minor chips are present across the wooden case consistent with age. The brass mounts show a natural aged patina with tarnishing and light surface scratches. The enamel dial is generally clean with some minor surface marks. The movement is present but has not been tested for mechanical function or timekeeping accuracy.
