Description

A pair of heavy cast iron fireplace andirons, also known as firedogs, designed in the Orientalist style. Each piece is cast with a decorative front in the form of a female bust, depicting a woman in ornate Eastern-style costume. The figures wear elaborate turbans with central jewels, drop earrings, and necklaces with scrolling details and large central pendants. The busts are mounted on integral rectangular pedestal bases. The front of each base features the word Sultane in relief, executed in a gothic or blackletter script. Extending from the rear of each decorative bust is a long horizontal bar of triangular section, intended to support logs within a fireplace. The metal has a matte black finish throughout.

Length: 38 cm (approx. 15 inches).

Condition report:

The items are in good used condition. There is visible wear to the black surface finish, including scuffs and minor scratches. Small areas of surface oxidation and light rust are present, particularly on the horizontal log support bars, consistent with age and previous use in a fireplace.
