Description

A collection of mid-to-late 20th-century British lapel badges and pins, primarily representing various trade unions and transport associations. The assortment includes multiple examples from the National Union of Railwaymen (NUR), featuring rectangular badges with steam locomotive motifs and circular membership pins. The Transport and General Workers Union (TGWU/T&G) is represented by badges for Professional Drivers, Retired Members, and Train Guards. Other organisations identified include the Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE), and the Electrical Trades Union (ETU) with a 20-year service badge. The collection also contains association pins such as the Stoolball Umpires Association, a Derby Education Committee Employment badge, and the National Federation of Old Age Pensions Association. Miscellaneous items include a celluloid Bertie Bassett mascot badge, a British Red Cross pin, and a gilt-metal RAF-style winged badge. Construction materials consist of gilt and chrome-plated base metals with hard and soft enamel finishes. One accompanying handwritten card identifies a manufacturer as Thomas Fattorini, Regent Street, Birmingham. Many pieces are individually preserved in plastic grip-seal bags with descriptive identification inserts.

Condition report:

The collection is in generally good to very good vintage condition. The enamel finishes remain largely vibrant with minimal chipping across the various examples. There is evidence of minor surface oxidation, tarnish, and wear consistent with age and use on the metal reverses and pin fastenings. Some handwritten identification cards show light age-toning.
