Lot 41:
Description
An antique brass steelyard balance scale of a type traditionally used for trade in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The instrument features a long, graduated brass arm machined with notches and stamped with numerical increments from 1 to 25. A cast brass bell-shaped poise with a weighted core is designed to slide along the arm. Suspended from a steel hook assembly is a large, circular spun-brass pan with a rolled rim, supported by four lengths of steel oval-link chain. The upper brass mechanism plate is stamped with the uppercase initials FB. The assembly includes two large steel hooks for suspension and mounting.
Balance arm length: Approximately 66 cm
Pan diameter: Approximately 25-30 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in good antique condition. All brass components exhibit an age-appropriate patina and surface tarnishing. The spun brass pan shows light surface scratching and several minor indentations consistent with regular commercial use. The steel chains and suspension hooks display surface oxidation and some light pitting.
