Lot 52:
Description
An assortment of navigational compasses of various designs. The collection includes a Silva A20 orienteering compass featuring a transparent acrylic baseplate, liquid-filled capsule with a rotating bezel, luminous markings, and scales in millimetres and inches. The baseplate is marked Silva Sweden A20 and it is fitted with a bright orange cord lanyard. Also included are two military-style lensatic sighting compasses in olive drab painted metal casings; the first features a flip-up sighting lid with a vertical wire and a folding magnifying lens, with the side of the base marked with a map scale reading Meters 1:50,000. The second military-style compass is a prismatic type with a rotating outer bezel and is attached to a heavy-duty olive drab cord lanyard via a metal ring. Completing the group is a small open-face pocket compass in a silver-toned metal case with a glass crystal. The white dial features black graduations and cardinal points, marked Germany below the centre point, and includes a swivel suspension loop.
Condition report:
The Silva compass is in good functional condition with clear markings. The two military-style compasses show surface wear and paint loss to the exterior casings consistent with field use, though the internal dials and optics appear clear. The pocket compass shows light tarnishing to the metal case, but the glass is clear and the needle appears to move freely. Mechanical accuracy and magnetic calibration have not been professionally tested.
