Description

This lot comprises a mid-20th-century traditional Spanish leather wine bota and two non-matching ceremonial dress epaulettes. The leather bota is teardrop-shaped and features a central embossed and painted panel depicting a figure in traditional Spanish dress, possibly a dancer or matador, set against an architectural backdrop. The flask is finished with a blue and cream leather binding and a red and white twisted cord border. It is fitted with a black plastic screw-top nozzle and a red and white cord carrying strap. At the base of the front panel, there is a hand-painted inscription in red characters on a yellow ground which reads Recuerdo de España.

The two ceremonial epaulettes are of similar red felt construction but are not a matching pair. The first epaulette features a circular head bordered by a red braided trim with a long red cord fringe and a single small, domed, gold-toned metal button on the strap portion; the reverse is finished in red fabric. The second epaulette features a contrasting gold and white braided border around the circular head and a red cord fringe; the reverse is finished in black fabric. These items were likely produced for the tourist market or as theatrical costume accessories.

Condition report:

The leather of the bota appears supple with light surface wear and minor scuffing to the painted highlights. The cordage shows some light age-related dust and fraying. Both epaulettes show signs of age with tangling and matting to the cord fringes. The red felt shows minor surface lint and light wear. As noted, the epaulettes are mismatched.
