Description
This collection of mid-20th-century barbering equipment comprises several straight razors, strops, and honing tools of French and Swiss manufacture. A notable item is a French straight razor by Pierre Hospital and Cie of Thiers, marked on the tang with Le Grelot 715/0 and featuring a blade etched with Marque de Qualité. The razors in the group are fitted with assorted handles, including black and faux-tortoiseshell celluloid. The assortment includes a Swiss-made Allegro Mod. Flexible 35 paddle strop, presented in its original faux-crocodile effect cardboard box. Additional items include two wooden-handled paddle strops, a cased single-sided strop within a wooden box with a sliding lid, and a small rectangular natural honing stone in dark grey. Several red cardboard razor boxes are also present in the group.
Condition report:
The collection is in a mixed, used condition consistent with age. Several carbon steel blades show oxidation and surface pitting. The leather surfaces on the strops display varying degrees of wear, including cracking and significant loss of material on the older paddle examples. The Allegro box exhibits edge wear and scuffing.
