Description

Two mid-20th-century student-grade compound microscopes. The first instrument features a black textured finish metal body with a triple revolving nosepiece, a fixed stage with slide clips, and an articulating sub-stage mirror. It is housed in a folding light-toned wooden case. The case includes fitted compartments for a slide rack containing six glass slides and a set of four preparation tools: scissors, a scalpel, a spatula, and a needle probe. Two additional eyepieces are held in wooden blocks. The word JAPAN is marked in blue on the lower front edge of the wooden case and is also visible on the black handles of the metal tools.

The second instrument is a microscope with a black-painted metal frame and rack-and-pinion focusing. It is fitted with a single objective lens and a sub-stage mirror. This instrument is housed in an upright hardwood cabinet of a mahogany tone, featuring a top-mounted metal carrying handle and a front-hinged door with a brass-coloured lock plate. The interior contains a small wooden drawer at the top for slide storage, which currently holds several glass slides.

Condition report:

Both microscopes show signs of use commensurate with age. The light-toned wooden case has minor surface wear and small handwritten marks. The preparation tools and additional eyepieces appear to be in good condition. The mahogany-toned cabinet shows surface scuffs, scratches, and wear to the wood and metal hardware. The mirrors on both instruments show minor age-related desilvering at the edges. Mechanical adjustment knobs and nosepieces are functional, though the optical clarity of the lenses has not been professionally tested.
