Lot 144:
Description
A decorative bas-relief plaque cast in a white metal alloy, likely pewter, presented in a deep-moulded oak frame. The scene is a three-dimensional reproduction of the painting titled ‘Der Kakteenfreund’ (The Cactus Friend) by the German Biedermeier artist Carl Spitzweg. The composition depicts a scholar in a cluttered interior examining a small cactus on a windowsill, surrounded by stacks of books and papers. The relief features a soft satin-grey patina with darkened recessed areas to enhance the depth of the casting. An applied metal plate on the lower section of the frame is inscribed with the title ‘Der Kakteenfreund’ above ‘Carl Spitzweg 1808-1885’. The plaque is mounted within a solid wood frame with a visible grain.
40 cm x 32 cm x 4 cm.
Condition report:
The item is in good overall condition. The metal relief shows minor surface wear and light oxidation consistent with age. The wooden frame has some light scuffing and small nicks to the edges. No significant damage or repairs are evident.
