Description

A three-piece cast metal desk or vanity set by the French Art Deco sculptor Max Le Verrier (1891–1973). The collection consists of a rectangular hinged box and a pair of matching shallow rectangular trays. Each piece is decorated in high relief with a medieval nautical scene titled Nef de Jacques Coeur 1440, depicting a merchant ship with oarsmen, stylized sails, and figures on deck against a background of waves and clouds. This motif is based on the emblem of the 15th-century French merchant Jacques Coeur. The set is finished with a characteristic Art Deco green and dark brown verdigris patina. The interior of the box is lined with green velvet. The reverse of each tray features the raised text Nef de / Jacques Coeur / 1440 and the cursive signature M. Le Verrier. The back edge of the box is impressed with the signature M. Le Verrier and the word BRONZE.

Box: Height 14.5 cm, Width 10.5 cm, Depth 3.5 cm

Trays: Height 11 cm, Width 8.5 cm.

Condition report:

The set is in good vintage condition. There is expected wear and rubbing to the raised surfaces of the patina, consistent with age and use. The interior velvet lining of the box shows minor signs of age, including light staining and fading. The hinge on the box remains functional.
