Description

This collection comprises a variety of late 19th and early 20th-century objects including scientific instruments, religious items, and metalware. The ephemera component consists of an assortment of stereoscopic cards or stereoviews mounted on yellow cardstock. These cards feature topographical and architectural views, including images of Fountains Abbey, South East and scenes from the Esplanade. The images depict historical ruins and public gatherings with figures in late Victorian or Edwardian period dress. Printed titles and copyright notices are present on the lower margins.

The scientific instruments include an octagonal wooden-cased folding equinoctial dial featuring a compass with a paper dial and handwritten scales for various cities. Also present is a professional brass ring mandrel with a turned wooden handle. The base of the brass sleeve is stamped with the marks Wilhelm Schwanborn, Bijouterie Fabrik, Hanau.

Metalware and accessories include a bronze or brass presentation plaque for the City of Brussels, inscribed Ville de Bruxelles / Stad Brussel, housed in a velvet-lined case. There are two purses: a gold-toned chainmail finger purse with a floral clasp and a larger silver-toned frame purse with a chain handle. Other items include a nickel-plated continuous-action mechanical corkscrew, a metal vesta or sovereign case with embossed circular designs on the lid, and a long decorative hatpin with a pearl-style bead in a fitted case.

Ecclesiastical and decorative items include a brass altar crucifix on a stepped circular base with an INRI scroll above the corpus. A small gilt-framed miniature painting depicts a winter landscape. A dark stained wooden wall-mounted letter rack or wall pocket features a silvered floral medallion. Finally, there is an intricately carved bone cylinder, likely a spill holder or handle fragment, decorated with foliate and scroll motifs.

Condition report:

The stereoscopic cards show typical signs of age including minor corner bumping, edge wear, and light surface foxing, though the photographic images retain good contrast. The brass items, including the crucifix and ring mandrel, show a natural aged patina and minor surface oxidation. The silver-toned metalware, specifically the purses and corkscrew, exhibit light tarnishing and surface wear. The wooden items, including the wall pocket and sundial case, show minor surface scratches and abrasions consistent with age. The presentation cases for the plaque and hatpin show moderate external shelf wear and scuffing.
