Description
A vintage German optical extinction exposure meter and depth of field calculator produced by Drem (Dr. Emil Mayer). The instrument features a cylindrical nickel-plated metal body with several rotating graduated rings and a flared black vulcanite eyepiece. The exterior is densely engraved with technical tables and instructional text in German. Visible markings include the circular DREM logo near the eyepiece and a main table titled Tabelle der Tiefenschärfe. Transcribed instructions include: Bei Verwendung der Hinter- bzw. Vorderlinse wird die Pfeilmarkierung um 2 Tabellenfelder zurückgestellt; Bei Gelbfilter 2-3x = 1… feld; and Erläuterung: ‘ = Sekunden, ” = Minuten, h = Stunden. A subject motion chart provides categories including: 1) Pferd im Galopp, 2) Eisenbahn, Kraftfahrzeuge, 3) Straßenbahn, 4) Fußballspieler, 5) Schiffe, and 6) Luftfahrzeuge. One ring is marked Schwarze Ziffern with a red arrow. The device is housed in a brown textured leather carrying pouch featuring a metal snap-frame closure.
Condition report:
The instrument displays age-related surface wear and light oxidation to the metal body. The vulcanite eyepiece remains intact. The leather pouch shows significant surface scuffing and wear along the edges and base. Mechanical and optical functions are untested.
