Lot 172:
Description
This lot comprises two mid-20th-century teddy bears of British origin. The first is a large, traditional jointed teddy bear featuring golden mohair plush on a woven cotton backing. It is fitted with amber-coloured glass eyes with black pupils, a large black moulded plastic or composition nose with nostril details, and a stitched inverted Y mouth. The bear features swivel joints at the neck, shoulders, and hips. The second item is a two-tone plush teddy bear by Chad Valley, as identified by a woven fabric label on the right side seam reading CHAD VALLEY MADE IN ENGLAND. This bear is constructed from brown and cream synthetic plush and features amber plastic eyes and a small black plastic nose. Cream-coloured plush is used for the muzzle, chest panel, ear interiors, and feet.
Large Bear: 48 cm
Chad Valley Bear: 26 cm.
Condition report:
The large mohair bear shows significant signs of age and playwear, with extensive loss of mohair plush across the body, head, and limbs, exposing the woven backing. Visible hand-stitched repairs are present on the upper right arm and around various seams. The fabric-covered paw pads show wear consistent with age. The Chad Valley bear is in good vintage condition with some general matting to the plush from handling; the colours remain clear and the label is intact.
