Lot 120:
Description
A collection of mid-20th-century aviation memorabilia comprising three commemorative porcelain plates and an assortment of vintage softcover publications. The porcelain plates feature gold-gilded rims and borders decorated with repeating propeller motifs. One plate depicts an Avro Lancaster bomber with registration WS-J in flight over Lincoln Cathedral, signed Ray Hutchins in the lower right. A second plate commemorates the Short Sunderland flying boat, featuring a portrait of Air Chief Marshal Sir Frederick Bowhill, aircraft registration 2O-E, and the crests of Short Brothers & Harland Ltd and the RAF Sunderland. The third plate illustrates the Bristol Beaufighter, including scenes of engine maintenance and a portrait of Wing Commander A.R. Gatward, DSO, DFC, alongside the Bristol Aeroplane Company and RAF Beaufighter crests.
The group of publications includes several titles from the Ian Allan abc series: Military Aircraft: British Spotter’s Recognition Handbook, Military Aircraft Recognition (1953 and undated editions), Civil Aircraft Recognition, and Civil Aircraft Markings 1953. Also included are two official guides published with the approval of the Ministry of Civil Aviation: The Airport and a World War II era manual titled German & Italian Aircraft: How to Spot Them, which contains silhouette drawings and photographic illustrations for aircraft identification.
Condition report:
The porcelain plates appear to be in good condition with no visible chips, cracks, or significant wear to the gilded edges. The publications show signs of age consistent with their vintage, including minor creasing to the covers, edge wear, and light discolouration to the paper.
