Lot 127:
Description
This lot features two early 20th-century technical instruments. The first is a Short’s Gas Leak Indicator, manufactured by Hattersley & Davidson Ltd of Sheffield. The instrument is constructed with a cylindrical brass body and a glass-covered dial. The dial is printed with a scale from 0 to 90 and bears the inscriptions SHORT’S GAS LEAK INDICATOR and HATTERSLEY & DAVIDSON LTD SHEFFIELD. The base of the unit contains four circular apertures revealing a white porous material. It is accompanied by a fitted cylindrical leather carrying case with a green felt-lined interior and a buckled strap.
The second instrument is a pocket-watch style voltmeter. The dial is graduated from 0 to 6 volts and features the brand name Auto in script and the term DEPOSE. The metal case includes a suspension loop at the top. This item is also housed in its own fitted brown leather case.
Gas Leak Indicator case height: approximately 14 cm
Voltmeter diameter: approximately 5 cm.
Condition report:
Both instruments exhibit signs of age and use. The brass on the gas leak indicator shows a deep natural patina and surface oxidation. Its leather case is heavily worn with significant scuffing, and the leather strap and lid stitching show deterioration and partial detachment. The pocket voltmeter shows tarnishing to the metal case and significant yellowing/foxing to the dial face. Neither instrument has been tested for mechanical or electrical functionality and they are sold as historical artefacts.
