Lot 147:
Description
This lot consists of two distinct compasses. The first is a professional-grade lensatic prismatic sighting compass housed in a heavy-duty die-cast metal casing with an olive drab green finish. It features a hinged lid with a glass viewing window and sighting wire, a liquid-damped rotating dial marked with both 0-360 degree and 0-6400 mil scales, and a magnifying prism for reading bearings while sighting. The unit includes an integrated spirit level bubble at the base of the dial and a thumb loop for stabilization. The reverse side features a printed four-column conversion table in German and English for angle, gradient, and width/distance, alongside a threaded socket for tripod mounting. It is accompanied by its original olive green canvas protective pouch with a press-stud fastener and belt loop. The second item is a decorative maritime-style presentation compass in a polished white metal casing. It is presented within a square, hinged wooden box with a circular recess in the lid. The black dial features cardinal and intercardinal points and a 360-degree scale, with a silvered needle tipped in green to indicate North.
Condition report:
The military-style compass is in good used condition with some minor surface wear to the painted finish at the edges. The dial moves freely, the spirit level is functional, and the optics are clear. The presentation compass and its wooden box are in excellent aesthetic condition with a high-lustre finish to both the metal and wood. The needle is well-balanced and responsive.
