Lot 151:
Description
A pair of Japanese costume dolls, known as Nihon ningyo, dating from the mid to late 20th century. The figures are presented on square, gold-surfaced wooden bases with dark-stained plinths. One figure wears a teal-blue silk brocade kimono decorated with gold and floral patterns, showing a pink under-kimono and a yellow obi tied at the back. Her hair is arranged in the nihongami style, embellished with a comb and floral kanzashi pin. The second figure is dressed in a red silk brocade kimono with gold-coloured floral motifs and holds a closed black fan. She wears a white ceremonial headpiece known as a tsunokakushi over her styled hair. The faces and hands are finished with gofun, a traditional paste made from crushed oyster shells, and feature hand-painted details.
Height: approximately 28 cm – 30 cm (including base).
Condition report:
The dolls are in good vintage condition. There is light surface dust accumulation, most notably on the white headpiece of the doll in red. The wooden bases show minor age-related wear and light scuffing to the edges.
