Lot 166:
Description
An assortment of mid-20th-century technical drawing and mathematical instruments. The collection includes three drafting sets in fitted cases. The first is a UNIS France set housed in a wooden case with a purple velvet lining; the interior lid is marked with a crest featuring a double-headed eagle above the letters UNIS and the word FRANCE within a diamond border. This set contains brass and steel compasses, dividers, and ruling pens, including a later addition compass with green decorative arms and a paw-print pattern. The second is a large set of silver-toned metal instruments in a rectangular case with a green velvet lining, comprising multiple compasses and dividers with extension bars. The third is a smaller set of silver-toned metal instruments in a black case with black lining.
The collection further includes several slide rules of European manufacture. These consist of an Aristo-Scholastic model in a white plastic case, an Aristo model in a yellow cardboard box, and a Staedtler model in a blue cardboard box. Additionally, there is a slide rule in a long brown leather case, one in a red plastic case, and another example in a white plastic case. A multi-section wooden folding ruler with brass hinges and linear scales is also included.
Condition report:
The items are in vintage, used condition. The cases for the drafting sets show external scuffing, edge wear, and signs of age. The UNIS France set contains non-original components. The slide rule packaging, particularly the cardboard boxes, shows creasing and wear. The wooden folding ruler displays significant patination and surface wear consistent with age. Metal instruments show minor surface oxidation but appear mechanically functional.
